Why Your Notion Setup Fails (and How to Fix It in 10 Minutes)

Most people quit Notion because they build for the person they wish they were. Here's how to build for the person you actually are.

I've watched hundreds of women start Notion with so much excitement, then abandon it three weeks later. The pattern is almost always the same: they build a system for their ideal self — the one who journals every morning and tracks every habit — instead of their real self, who is tired and just needs to know what's for dinner.

The fix isn't more discipline. It's less system. Start with one page that answers one question: what do I need to see today? For most people, that's three things: today's tasks, this week's meals, and one money number. That's it. You can add more later.

Second, make it pretty. I know that sounds shallow, but it's not. If your Notion looks like a spreadsheet from 2004, you won't open it. Soft colors, a nice cover image, and a little breathing room go a long way. You're not decorating — you're removing friction.

Third, set a two-minute timer. If a section takes longer than that to set up, it's too complicated. Delete it or simplify it. Your future self will thank you for the restraint.

Last thing: give yourself permission to change it. Your life shifts. Your Notion should shift with it. A template isn't a contract — it's a starting point. Tweak it until it feels like yours, then stop tweaking and start living.
