Why I Stopped Chasing the Perfect Notion Setup
The endless tweaking was costing me more than it was giving me—here's what I do instead.
For two years, I treated my Notion workspace like a craft project. I'd spend entire evenings rearranging databases, testing new icons, and watching YouTube tutorials on advanced formulas. My setup looked incredible. It also didn't help me pay a single bill on time.
The turning point was a Tuesday night when I realized I'd spent 45 minutes formatting a grocery list instead of actually buying groceries. I closed my laptop and wrote down the three things I actually needed from a system: capture tasks, see my week, and track money. That's it.
So I stripped everything back. My current workspace has one dashboard, three linked databases, and zero conditional formatting. It's not impressive to look at, but I open it every morning without dread. The fancy stuff lives in a separate 'playground' page I visit maybe once a month.
If you're stuck in the tweaking loop, try this: set a 20-minute timer, delete anything you haven't touched in two weeks, and see if your system still works. Mine did. Yours probably will too.
Perfection isn't the goal. A tool you actually use is.
