The One-Tab Rule for Overwhelmed Notion Beginners

If you're new to Notion, stop building. Start with one tab and let it grow naturally.

Every week someone emails me the same question: 'I opened Notion and immediately felt lost. Where do I start?' My answer is always the same. Close everything. Open one blank page. Name it 'Today.'

That's it. No databases, no relations, no rollups. Just a page where you write down the three things you want to finish before you go to bed. Tomorrow, you make a new one. Do this for a week.

What happens next is almost magical. You start to notice patterns. You keep writing 'call the vet' and 'pay electric bill' and 'email Sarah.' Suddenly you don't need a complicated system — you need a simple list of recurring tasks. So you make one. One page, one list.

The one-tab rule isn't about staying simple forever. It's about letting your system earn its complexity. Most people build a mansion before they know if they even like the neighborhood.

If you're three days into Notion and already watching advanced tutorials, stop. Go write your three things for today. That's the whole job.
