How to Build a Morning Routine You'll Actually Keep
Stop forcing a 5 AM workout. Here's how to design a morning routine that fits your life and actually sticks.
We've all been there: you set your alarm for 5:30, lay out your workout clothes, and plan to journal while sipping lemon water. But by day three, you hit snooze and skip it all. The problem isn't your willpower — it's your routine.
A routine that sticks has to be simple, flexible, and tailored to you. Start by choosing one anchor habit you already do every morning, like making coffee or brushing your teeth. Attach your new habit to that anchor. For example, after I pour my coffee, I open my planner and write down my top three priorities for the day. It takes two minutes, but it sets the tone for everything.
Another trick is to lower the bar. Instead of aiming for a 30-minute workout, commit to 5 minutes of stretching. You can always do more if you feel like it, but the goal is to show up. On busy days, the 5 minutes count. On easy days, you'll go longer.
I've built a free template in Notion that helps you plan your perfect morning routine step by step. It includes prompts to define your energy peaks, choose your anchor, and track your consistency. You'll be amazed at how much calmer your mornings feel when you're not forcing a rigid plan.
So start small, attach it to something you love, and be kind to yourself on the days you slip. Your morning routine should support you, not stress you out.
