Behind the Scenes: Redesigning the Home Dashboard
A look at the messy, iterative process behind the new Home Dashboard update — including the feature I cut at the last minute.
Every template update starts with a folder of screenshots from customers who've made it their own. I read every email and note where people get stuck. For the Home Dashboard, the sticking point was the cleaning schedule. People loved the idea, hated the daily view.
So I rebuilt it around a weekly reset instead of a daily checklist. One page, seven zones, and a simple 'done' toggle. I also added a spot for 'one small thing' — a single task that takes under five minutes. That tiny addition got more replies than anything else in the update.
The feature I cut? A grocery list synced to a meal planner. It looked great in my head, but in practice it required too many steps to set up. If a feature needs a tutorial, it doesn't belong in a template that promises calm.
