Behind the Scenes: Designing My Notion Templates
Ever wonder how a Notion template comes to life? I’m sharing my process—from messy sketches to a finished product—and the lessons I learned.
When I first started making Notion templates, I thought it would be simple: open a page, add some headings, call it a day. But soon I realized that a template needs to feel like a warm hug, not a spreadsheet. That’s when I started paying attention to the little details.
Every template begins with a problem I’m trying to solve. For the Home Management template, it was the chaos of too many lists and sticky notes. I sketched out a main dashboard with quick links to different areas—meals, cleaning, bills. Then I asked, “What would make this feel less like work?”
The answer was color. Soft neutrals, calming greens, a pop of blush. I chose fonts that are easy to read and added plenty of white space. It sounds simple, but it took hours of tweaking to get it right.
The biggest lesson? Less is more. I used to add tons of features, but it only made things complicated. Now I strip everything down to the essentials, then test it with real users. Their feedback is gold—it’s how I learned that checkboxes are more satisfying than dropdowns, and that a “weekly reset” button is a game-changer.
